This Privacy Policy outlines our practices concerning the collection, use, and protection of your information when you use our mobile application, MovieAlike (the "App"). We are dedicated to safeguarding your privacy and handling your data with transparency and respect.
We encourage you to read this policy carefully. By using the App, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this policy. IF YOU DO NOT AGREE WITH THE TERMS OF THIS PRIVACY POLICY, PLEASE DO NOT ACCESS THE APPLICATION.
What is personal data?
Personal data is any information relating to an identified or identifiable natural person. Examples include a name, email address, or online identifiers. For our App, personal data primarily refers to online identifiers and usage data automatically collected from your device.
How and what data do we collect from you?
Our App is designed to function without requiring you to create a personal user account. Therefore, we do not ask for or collect information such as your name or email address for account registration purposes.
Information Stored Locally:
- Watchlist: The App allows you to create a personal watchlist of movies. This information is stored exclusively on your local device and is not collected, transmitted to, or accessed by us.
Data Collected Automatically:
When you use our App, we and our service providers (specifically Firebase, a Google service) automatically collect certain data related to your device and interaction with the App. This is analogous to "Navigation Data" and data collected through "cookies" or similar technologies. This data includes:
- User and Device Identifiers: An anonymous identifier for your app installation (e.g., Firebase Installation ID) and certain device information (such as device model, operating system version, IP address, which may infer general location). This helps us recognize your device for analytics and service provision.
- App Interactions & Usage Data: Information about how you use the App, such as features accessed, screens viewed, in-app search terms (e.g., movies, actors searched for), and other interactions.
- Crash Logs: If the App encounters an error, data relating to the crash (including device state and a Crashlytics Installation UUID) is collected by Firebase Crashlytics to help us diagnose and resolve issues, thereby improving App stability and performance. This data is retained by Firebase for 90 days.
- Advertising ID: Firebase Analytics may collect your device’s Advertising ID (such as the GAID on Android). Please note that our App does not contain advertisements. We do not use this identifier for advertising purposes. Its collection is a default part of the Firebase Analytics service which we use to analyze App performance and user interaction. Users can typically reset their Advertising ID or limit ad tracking via their mobile device's settings, which may limit the collection of this identifier.
Data Obtained from Third-Party Services (Content Source):
- The Movie Database (TMDB): The App retrieves and displays movie-related information (such as titles, posters, summaries, ratings) from The Movie Database (TMDB) API using secure HTTPS endpoints. We do not obtain personal data about you from TMDB, nor do we share your personal data with TMDB through this process. If you navigate to TMDB's services, their privacy policy (available at https://www.themoviedb.org/privacy-policy) will apply.
How do we use this data?
We use the information collected primarily to:
- Provide, Customize, and Improve the App: Deliver the App’s core functionality, including movie search and recommendations; understand user behavior to enhance user experience, App features, and content relevance.
- Maintain App Performance and Stability: Monitor App usage, diagnose and fix technical issues (including crashes), and ensure the overall stability and security of our services.
- Analytics: Analyze trends and user interactions to improve the quality and relevance of the App and its movie recommendations.
Legal Basis for Processing (GDPR & LGPD):
We process your personal data based on our legitimate interests in providing and improving a functional and engaging application, performing analytics, and maintaining app stability. We ensure that these activities are balanced against your data protection rights.
What are your rights regarding your data?
You possess certain rights concerning the privacy and protection of your personal data. These include:
- Confirmation of Processing: The right to request confirmation as to whether your personal data is being processed.
- Access to Data: The right to request and receive a copy of your personal data that we process.
- Correction of Data: The right to request the correction or rectification of incomplete, inaccurate, or outdated personal data.
- Anonymization, Blocking, or Deletion: The right to request the anonymization, blocking, or deletion of unnecessary, excessive, or unlawfully processed personal data. Personal data will be deleted or anonymized when no longer necessary for the purposes for which it was collected, upon your request, or as otherwise required by law, unless there is a legitimate basis for its retention (e.g., to comply with a legal obligation).
- Data Portability: The right to request the transfer of your personal data to another service provider, where technically feasible and applicable by law.
- Information on Sharing: The right to obtain information about public and private entities with which we have shared your data.
- Withdrawal of Consent: If processing is based on consent, you have the right to withdraw your consent at any time, though this will not affect the lawfulness of processing based on consent before its withdrawal. (Note: Our current processing is primarily based on legitimate interests).
- Objection to Processing: The right to object to certain processing activities, particularly those based on legitimate interests, if you believe your rights and freedoms outweigh our legitimate interests. We may demonstrate compelling legitimate grounds for the processing which override your rights if the data is strictly essential for the App's functionality.
To exercise these rights, please contact our Data Protection Officer (Encarregado) / Privacy Contact as indicated in the "Contact" section. We will take reasonable steps to verify your identity before processing your request. Requests will be addressed within the timeframes stipulated by applicable law.
Do not sell my personal information
If you are a California resident, you have the right to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of your personal information under the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) / California Privacy Rights Act (CPRA). We do not "sell" your personal information in the common sense of the term (i.e., for monetary payment). Our use of service providers like Firebase for analytics and crash reporting is not intended as a "sale" or "sharing" for cross-context behavioral advertising as defined by CCPA/CPRA. We configure such services to act as our service providers. If our practices change, we will update this policy.
To exercise any of your California privacy rights, including the Right to Know, Right to Delete, and Right to Correct, please submit a request to the email address provided in the "Contact" section.
Who do we share this data with?
We do not share your personally identifiable information except with:
- Information Technology Service Providers (Firebase): We use Firebase (a Google service) for analytics and crash reporting. These services help us understand App usage and improve stability. Google processes data according to its privacy policy (https://policies.google.com/privacy) and acts as our data processor. Data is processed on third-party platforms which may be located in various countries, including the United States. We ensure appropriate safeguards are in place for such international data transfers, such as Standard Contractual Clauses, where required by laws like GDPR or LGPD.
- Governmental Authorities: We may disclose your information if required by law, to comply with legal or judicial orders, or to protect our rights and the safety of our users.
We do not share your personal data with The Movie Database (TMDB).
How do we protect this data?
We employ administrative, technical, and physical security measures designed to protect your information from unauthorized access, use, alteration, or destruction. This includes using encrypted communications (HTTPS) with our service providers and adhering to secure development practices. While we strive to use commercially acceptable means to protect your Personal Data, no method of transmission over the Internet or method of electronic storage is 100% secure, and we cannot guarantee its absolute security. We have procedures in place to deal with any suspected data security breach and will act promptly in such events. We also require our third-party service providers to implement appropriate security measures by way of contractual agreements.
